    CORE DISTRICT CONDOS

Stretching from A street to Broadway and Union and 12th Avenue is the Core district. Just as the name implies, the neighborhood is central to government, entertainment, culture, and residential activity. The area was initially developed by Alonzo Horton in the 1860s with the addition of hotel and retail establishments. During the Roaring 20s, several grand theatres were added. Unfortunately, due mostly to suburbanization,  the once fashionable area began to decline in the 1960s and instead of a place of recreation and excitement it became more of a boring business environment.  Then around 1975, the Centre City Development Corporation became a driving force in revitalizing the Core by renovating old buildings for commercial and residential use. Present day, there is once again a flurry of activity and life in the area.

The Core is home to many of the Federal, State, County, and City government offices. There are still a few notable and historical structures that are in existence, such as the Westgate and U.S. Grant Hotels, the Marriott Courtyard, the City Administration Building complex, and the Civic Theatre.  The San Diego Opera, Southern California’s longest established opera company, offers extravagant opera productions at the Civic Theatre. Shopping and recreational activities are abundant on Broadway and C Street.

The Core district is a great environment for living and working. There is no need for residents to ever leave downtown, as everything they need is at their disposal.
