North of downtown is the Cortez District. This district is two neighborhoods in one, the hill dominated by the El Cortez Apartments and the flatter area that is west of Sixth Avenue also known as Cortez West. This area has a rich history and the featured landmark is of course, the El Cortez Hotel. The El Cortez Hotel, a grand and glamorous hotel that opened in the 1920s. It was a grand Hotel that catered to the rich and pampered for several decades. Around 1978, the Hotel started to deteriorate, thanks in part, to some dubious owners, and began to loose its glam and luster. It soon became an eyesore. The building has since been converted into luxurious condominiums and has been preserved as a historical landmark. Cortez district is named after this famous landmark.
Many of the dwellings in the neighborhood have maintained their original and charming Victorian style. The area boasts spectacular views of downtown San Diego, Balboa Park, the bay and Pacific Ocean. The district is a mix of residential and commercial buildings and shops and cafes line streets. Schools and churches are located in a pedestrian-friendly environment giving the area an intimate neighborhood feel.
The Cortez district is in close proximity to the Core and close to all the activity downtown San Diego has to offer, yet at the same time the neighborhood provides a cozy and intimate atmosphere. Condos that are featured in Cortez include none other than the El Cortez, Beech Tower,Cortez Blu,Discovery,El Cortez,Palermo,Park View,Solara Lofts,Symphony Terrace, and The Mills.
