New Condos Downtown San Diego - Labor Day

While we relax on Labor Day and assume it is just the last holiday of summer, the history is somewhat different that our assumptions. Over 126 years ago, 10,000 workers assembled in New York for the first Labor Day Parade. After the parade the workers gathered with their friends and families for a picnic, concert and labor speeches. I never knew this holiday was started by a carpenter and labor union leader.
Peter J. McGuire, said carpenter cofounded the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions. This is the granddaddy of the AFL, todays American Federation of Labor. .
The first labor day was the second Tuesday in September, sort of a break between the 4th of July and Thanksgiving. Over 126 years later we all take this holiday for granted, although the holiday has moved to the first Tuesday in September.
This year I am sure our Presidential candidates will be tromping around meeting and greeting. If you live in a downtown San Diego condo, I wouldn't hold my breath in meeting them today, but you may meet some other downtown San Diego residents enjoying this holiday just like you.
