New Downtown San Diego Condos: Where Did Smart Corner Go?

What's in a name? Something special I guess if you look at the latest downtown San Diego name change. Smart Corner, which has had some problems in selling, has been renamed to Sky View Lofts. While I do admit Sky View Lofts sounds better than Smart Corner, one has to wonder if the name change will make much of a difference.

Smart Corner aka Sky View Lofts began as a great experiment. Live in an energy efficient project and just head downstairs to the trolley station to ride to work, wherever that may be. The concept was great. The execution created problems. Built as "affordable housing" in downtown San Diego, Smart Corner was forced to have high monthly homeowner association fees, thus defeating the entire "affordability" idea.

Here is an interesting article on Smart Corner aka Sky View Lofts and differences in opinion from good economists regarding when the downtown San Diego market is going to turn around. What's a person to do? If economists can't agree, how in the heck is a buyer supposed to know what to do?

So the answer to buying downtown is buy carefully. Buy to live the lifestyle. Buy to hold for a few years until condo inventory is absorb and there is a new shortage.
