Downtown San Diego Condos: It's Nicky Rottens This Time

Well, the food march continues.  This time I managed to eat in the same block as Funky Garcias.  I started out looking for Chocolat and ended up eating at Nicky Rottens.  Noon on Friday at Nicky Rottens

is a busy time.  I typically avoid eating at the bar because a crowded bar is crowded.  However, Nicky Rottens was packed and the bar was the only place I could find.  My companions on both sides were very nice people.  One side was a daughter and her Dad, while on the other side I met Michael, who turns out to be a mult-talented individual.

Michael caught my interest because both of his arms were full of tatoos.  I love to look at tatoos because they are always interesting and always have a story.  Michael and I started talking.  When you reach a certain age in life, it is a lot easier to talk to people because they figure you are harmless and not hitting on them.  They just figure you are curious.

Michael has two really unique jobs.  He plays drums for a band bar, and was setting up a playlist for his Saturday night biker bar job.  I am guessing that job will be quite interesting.  Michael's second job is equally interesting.  He works for a debt restructuring company, or rather a company that helps people get their bills in order and get some extra time from creditors rather than bankruptcy.  I admit I know little about these companies.  I know some are good companies and some are not so good.  While we were sitting at the bar a commercial came on for Michael's company, Fidelity Debt Solutions.  To tell you the truth, I am not familiar with how the program works, but if you or anyone you know wants to check it out you can visit the website or call Michael Hurst  michael@fidelitydebtsolutions.com Phone: (888) 241-2416 ext 227 or
Direct:  (619) 814-2427.  At the very least you can always ask him how the biker bar job turned out.

My lunch consisted of three sliders and french fries.  Food was good.  Noise was loud, but that is the atmosphere.  Service was good and attitudes were great.  This is one of the reasons people who live and rent Downtown San Diego condos love the lifestyle.

Downtown San Diego Condos: Funky Garcias Begins the Journey

As I was eating lunch today at Funky Garcias, it occurred to me that I could start a food journey.  How long would it take and how would I like it if I ate my way around one Downtown San Diego block at a time?

So I decided I would start at Funky Garcias, which interestingly enough used to be the old Sun Cafe.  The Sun Cafe was a downtown San Diego landmark and if you live in one of the downtown San Diego condos, you may have eaten breakfast at Sun Cafe.  That being said, time moves on and restaurants change and relocate or close.  Funky's is a great place to start and now all I need to do is decide where next.  Nicky Rottens or Tabule or The Field Pub.

Some people collect butterflies.  Some people watch birds, or football or baseball.  Since food and I are great friends, this might be the best hobby for me.  The key, I am thinking, is to see if I can eat at each restaurant in this particular block and eat healthy at the same time.  Today was fairly healthy, a taco and a tostada.  No chips because Victoria told me to knock them off.

My camera phone may not take the best picture in the world, but trust me, this carne asada taco and pollo tostada tasted better than my picture looks.  My waitress was really efficient and cheerful, and sometimes that also goes a long way.

For my first stop in my new "Eat My Way Around the Block" tour, Funky Garcias was worth the lunch.

Downtown San Diego Condos: Funky Garcias is Truly Funky!

It is so fantastic living and working in Downtown San Diego.  Our Willis Allen office located next to Dick's Last Resort on 5th Avenue is at the center of the downtown hub of activity.  Victoria and I were feeling a little ravenous this afternoon so we decided to take a walk.  We ended up at Funky Garcias and from the exterior, the name definitely fits.  From the exterior it looks like one of those places where you have to think about going in for a meal.  However, Victoria assured me it serves fantastic Mexican food and she was right.  We ordered carne asada and chicken tacos and stuffed, stuffed, stuffed ourselves.

If you visit the Funky Garcias website you can see there are specials everyday.  The food is excellent, but what makes Funky's even better are its time-warped videos featuring Meat Loaf, Boy George and The Village People.  It was a real step back in time.

Everyone was cheerful.  Our waitress was efficient and attuned to our every ice tea refill need.  All in all it was a fantastic afternoon snack at a more than reasonable price.  If you are in Downtown San Diego, take a walk over to 421 Market and step inside Funky Garcias.  I loved it!
